A
doula is an important part of birth, it doesn’t matter what language you
speak or what country you live in.
The Beng of West Africa believe
in calling to the baby to entice him or her out. This lets the baby know
the family is prepared for their arrival.
The Balinese of
Indonesia & the Warlpiri of Australia believe
that the Earth is the source of all life and gives you protection and
strength. Therefore squatting and giving birth directly onto the Earth is
considered a form of tribute.
Muslim villagers
in Turkey give birth in a tub of water with only family
members as attendants.
The Ifuluk of
Micronesia believe that a woman should have no more than
2 companions during labour and should, ultimately, deliver her own baby.
